The Year in Local Music

Leila Lopez welcomes listeners in on ‘Fault Lines,’ the 2010 TAMMIES Best New Release

8 replies on “2010 TAMMIES Winners!”

  1. Who are some of these bands ?? Do they play other places besides Club Congress and Plush about 2 or 3 times a year.??? There are a lot of real working bands that the editors of this paper don’t know about and who play someplace other than downtown and who could blow some of these bands out the door. I suggest that the editors and “critics” get out of downtown and hear some of the real working bands in Tucson. They just might be surprised at the quality of the music that goes on outside of downtown.

  2. Timmothy: The “editors of this paper” don’t decide the TAMMIES winners. Two groups of people vote: 1) the public and 2) a group of 20 writers, critics, club bookers and music aficionados. The top vote-getters from each group then go into a final round of public voting. So … your criticism is misplaced. If there’s a great band out there that’s being missed, let us know about ’em.

  3. Jimmy…First, sorry about the double post. Computer error.

Yes, I know the editors don’t pick the Tammies winners, but take a look at the critics list. Pretty tight group don’t you think. ? Downtown is highly represented. I wonder just how many of the “critics” go beyond the boundaries of downtown to see other, real working bands play. I go to Plush and Club Congress so as to see what’s going on with our local music. It’s the same bands playing to the same people over and over.

The scene is indeed vibrant, and that’s great, but year after year the Weekly pimps the same local, downtown bands. Maybe if they made some real effort to see what’s going on around town they’d find that the music scene is bigger than they thought, and better.

As to your suggestion, I will make an effort to let you know about other bands I hear .

    Thanks

  4. I disagree that the critics are only focused on downtown; this, frankly, strikes me as sour grapes. There are a lot of bands who were winners or finalists who play beyond HoCo or Plush. In any case, I look forward to hearing about these bands we’ve missed.

  5. How about a qualification rule. Lets say that to be eligible a band has to have played at least 6 gigs in the past year in front of more than a dozen people. There are a number on the list who would not qualify.

  6. You see the same bands and the same names over and over thru the years….I agree with Jimmy on this….Pretty tight knit group…If you don’t play downtown or at “certain” venues, it’s safe to say that you won’t see any other names on this list….I like how Timmothy tries to reason it out….It’s all about ballot stuffing….2 groups…the public…..So basically if you can get your mom, dad and every Tom, Dick & Harry (the same ones that come to your show…and are the only ones there) then bingo….and if you are buddies with one of these so called critics….SHAZAMM!!! Who are these so called critics???

I agree that there should be some sort of requirements to weed out some of these names….Like maybe another thing to add is that you have to play at a certain number of DIFFERENT venues….rather than the same one…Continuously….

Some names to considered checking out:

    The Collectors
    Crosscut Saw
    Neil Russell
    GRIND

Each one of the names I posted here play a different style of music. This is to show that I do get around and listen to ALL kinds of musicians AWAY from the “so called scene”. These guys definitely would blow the doors off the names on the list
