Papa’s Knows Best
If we had an “Eatery of the Week” award, I’d be handing it to the
hard-working guys at Papa’s Jerk Center (2030 S. Park Ave.). From the
hand-scrawled sign outside, to the sumptuous jerk chicken, beans and
rice, oxtail and steamed vegetables inside, the place is pure Jamaican
gold. Those who’ve tried Papa’s food at Tucson Meet Yourself know what
I’m talking about. Those who haven’t can get educated from 11 a.m. to

Teen Iron Chef Competition
Teenagers cooking for themselves? It seemed like an urban legend
until organizers of the Teen Iron Chef Competition assured me such a
thing existed. They went on to explain that seven student teams will
compete to create healthy snacks, entrées and smoothies using a
secret ingredient, with celebrity judges picking the winner. The event
takes place from noon to 2 p.m., Saturday, April 18, at the John
Valenzuela Youth Center (1550 S. Sixth Ave.). Admission is free;

Hair of the Dog
If you’ve never taken your dog out drinking, shame on you! Our
four-legged counterparts deserve an occasional outing like the
dog-friendly Yappy Hour from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, April 23, at the
newly renovated Lodge on the Desert (306 N. Alvernon Way). Pet-themed
cocktails and information about local pet services will be available.

“The Art of Food, the Art of Life”
Take a trip through the cuisine of India, Bangladesh, Nepal,
Pakistan and Sri Lanka with award-winning food writers Naomi Duguid and
Jeffrey Alford and their lecture “The Art of Food, the Art of Life” at
5 p.m., Thursday, April 23. The event takes place at the Center for
Creative Photography (1030 N. Olive Road); chai tea and samosas will be

Art and Wine Benefit
Four wines from Tempe-based Valley of the Sun Fine Wines and Spirits
will be featured at a benefit for La Paloma Kids in the courtyard of La
Encantada (2905 E. Skyline Drive) from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Thursday,
April 23. Photography and art by kids in La Paloma’s programs will be
for sale. Wine is $6 per glass, with proceeds benefiting abused,
