Even the most skilled improvisers will tell you they do their best work when they get out of their own way.

When professional hypnotist Assad Mecci was taking courses at The Second City and noticed that instructors would often say, โ€œGet out of your head.โ€ At the same time, though, they were dispensing core rules of what improvisers call โ€œthe game of the sceneโ€ โ€” the beats, the characters, the partner relationship, the donโ€™ts. Add to that all the dimensions of an audience suggestion, and itโ€™s quite a lot for a new improviser to get into their head about.

โ€œ(Improv) games are designed to focus somebody consciously on the game,โ€ he said, โ€œand then they want unconscious functioning!โ€

โ€œSo, I thought, โ€˜Is it possible to hypnotize somebody who doesnโ€™t have improv experience and turn them into good improvisers?โ€™ Well, bringing the worldโ€™s greatest improviser to improvise with them while under hypnosis would make for an incredible show!โ€

He thought immediately of Colin Mochrie, a 40-year veteran of the worldโ€™s best-known improv show, โ€œWhose Line Is It Anyway?โ€ and reached out to him on his website.

Mecci already had logged 40 shows on Broadway and performed his solo act with Carnival, Disney and Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines. Mochrieโ€™s agent responded and set up a meeting.

โ€œHe told me about this frankly insane combination of two skills,โ€ Mochrie said, โ€œand I was fascinated. Iโ€™ve been improvising for 40 years, so Iโ€™m always trying to find ways of doing it that still scare me. When Iโ€™m outside of my comfort zone, thatโ€™s when most of the magic happens. And I thought, โ€˜You really canโ€™t get much farther than working with people who Iโ€™ve never met who are in hypnotic trance.โ€™

โ€œWhat heโ€™s actually doing is taking the part away thatโ€™s stopping them from using this talent that they already have.โ€

Since Mochrie signed on for โ€œHyprov,โ€ the duo has performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and in over 70 cities across the U.S. and Canada.

But how does Mecci know whoโ€™s hypnotized? โ€œItโ€™s very important for the audience to understand this,โ€ he said. โ€œWe donโ€™t use plants. Weโ€™ve never met any of the people before who come up on stage and volunteer. We invite 20 volunteers up to the stage. I hypnotize them, and then work it down to the best hypnotic subjects.โ€

He starts by guiding the group through scenarios, for instance, imagining that theyโ€™re on a beach in Hawaii. He says that as the candidates respond to his suggestions, heโ€™s looking for a โ€œtell.โ€ โ€œItโ€™s kind of like what poker players look for when theyโ€™re trying to get a read,โ€ he said.

โ€œIโ€™m looking for a physiological change (such as) breathing changes, skin color changes, skin tone changes, dilation in the eyes, the capillaries in the eyes become engorged, the eyes start to tear up. If I see it, Iโ€™ll keep that person on stage.โ€ Ultimately, he narrows the field to the most susceptible four or five volunteers.

โ€œThe fascinating part about really good hypnotic subjects is that the part of the brain that deals with self-reflection will become disconnected,โ€ Mecci said. โ€œThey no longer reflect on their behavior. They just carry out my suggestions without hesitation and without question, which makes for a really good, seamless improv.

โ€œFor example, when I say to somebody, โ€˜You fall madly in love with Colin. Youโ€™re going to propose to Colin,โ€ thereโ€™s no hesitancy. They immediately jump into the scene and are fully committed.โ€

Thereโ€™s no gaming the selection process, either. โ€œPeople who are hypnotized play it straight. They donโ€™t play to the audience. Thereโ€™s an economy of movement. I donโ€™t mind giving away this information because if somebody tries to replicate it, the audience start to pick up on it. โ€™This person is an anomaly. Theyโ€™re not behaving like the others.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ve learned so much about hypnosis,โ€ Mochrie said. โ€œThere are so many misconceptions out there. I think people have a hard time believing in the show because they think when Assad hypnotizes them, heโ€™s adding a superpower to them.

โ€œAnd what heโ€™s actually doing is taking the part away thatโ€™s stopping them from using this talent that they already have.โ€

โ€œOnce Assad gets them in their state,โ€ Mochrie said, โ€œthen we have formed an improv (ensemble). We have a list of improv games that we play. So we get suggestions from the audience.โ€

From there, itโ€™s anything goes. They make make up songs based on audience suggestions. They create animals and life event scenarios. The highlight of the show is a radio play in which the audience volunteer plays different characters, changing their physiology and their vocal qualities for each one.

Mochrie recalled one particularly memorable game of โ€œFilm Noir,โ€ a murder mystery that typically concludes with Mochrie reciting the evidence leading to a confession on the part of the murderer, played by the audience volunteer.

โ€œOne night,โ€ he recalled, โ€œI said to this woman, โ€˜Youโ€™re the murderer!โ€™ and she said, โ€˜What are you talking about? This isnโ€™t real. Youโ€™re in a dream, Colin. Youโ€™re in an insane asylum right now!โ€™

Mochrie admits he was taken a back, and it took him a minute to recover, but, he said, โ€œThere are curve balls like that all the timeโ€”truly moments where I just stare at them going, โ€˜I have no idea how Iโ€™m going to use this.โ€™โ€

But he admits thatโ€™s the vulnerability heโ€™s looking for. โ€œYou know, when Iโ€™m working with the โ€˜Whose Lineโ€™ (players), someone like Ryan (Stiles), who Iโ€™ve worked with for over 40 years, I can see where he is going to lead the scene. I have none of that with these people because theyโ€™re not thinking (how) we can work toward an ending.

โ€œAll they have is the present. Theyโ€™re truly living in the moment. So that makes it exciting.โ€
