I’m not much for making a big deal about Valentine’s Day, except when it comes to helping my son fill out the obligatory valentines for his classmates and helping him go through each one when he gets home. You forget how important this exchange was in grade school. Nothing has changed.
But I was reminded recently that there’s an entire archive of great Valentine’s music out there that could make the day worth celebrating, especially when served by director John Waters. He’s like that cool uncle you always wished you had, but with cool taste in music. Check out his DATE record and NPR interview served up for Valentine’s Day 2007.

Love the man, love this CD.
early 1980’s soho loft party around the time of lust in the dust was out, john was perched on the edge of public acceptance. he bummed a cig. and we talked about the two headed calf host owned. the john waters of today is groovy and all but he is a bit homo-genized for mass middle media corn fed america to my mind. which is wonderful and oh so very npr latte-ish kitch. but give me the days of divine chowing down on dog shit. not hairspray the hit broadway musical (although pecker was sweet as was that one about the aliens making everyone sex fiends). i approve of his seriel killer holiday ornamnets. keepng the mass murderer in christmas don’tcha know.
KGH – You are so lucky… and you are right. But I liken it to all these Baby Boomers I know who went into Real Estate before our asses caught up with our evil lending ways. They had to figure out a retirement. Maybe that’s what John did with his musical folly.
