Best Classical Music DJ

Michael Harrington
KUAT 89.1-FM

STAFF PICK: After just a year in Tucson, Michael Harrington has clearly set the standard for spinning classical. Unlike some former and current colleagues, he not only correctly pronounces all the foreign titles and composer's names, he gets the English ones right as well. He remembers to fully announce the artists being played and notices when the wrong track is aired. And, for context, he often relays witty anecdotal snippets about the music. He does play an inordinate amount of Leonard Bernstein, which is super as long as it doesn't slow down the flow of other great composers like Paray, Reiner and Toscanini. A little more Beecham would be nice, but who's complaining? Harrington could easily make it in a major market, so we're lucky to have him here at the University-sponsored station. Given that his last gig of many years was in his native Beaumont, Texas, that fortunately doesn't seem likely. Or so we hope.
