Best Pirate Radio

Radio Limbo, 103.3-FM

STAFF PICK: Just when you'd given up hope, finally, a radio station that plays Stereolab! Its signal limited to central Tucson, Radio Limbo broadcasts in a legally gray air space, sending out some of the best mixed signals ever to find their way into the Sonoran night sky. The rotating formats are hosted by undisclosed locals with some of the best, most eclectic record (yes, as in vinyl LP) collections in town. The hourly and bi-hourly shows, with monikers like "Easy Action," "Schtick of the Week," "Euphonophoria" and "The Break-Up Show," run unedited and uncompromised from 8 p.m. to midnight weeknights, starting a few hours earlier on the weekend. The quasi-fictional cast of characters includes Vance Fink, Sambrosa, DJ Hella Strong, Rachel and Raquel, Phase Lock, Manny Mota, Serge and Bebe, and Monique Potin, to name a few. Radio Limbo will broadcast anything, as long as it's superb, obscure or so damned bad it's got a B-quality appeal. They may not have a leg to stand on, but they do have a website: www.azstarnet.com/~limbo/. Unlike other stations with, well, money, Radio Limbo is beholden to no one. So raise your antenna, tune your dial and cross your fingers in hopes that Radio Limbo is around long enough to find its way into next year's Best of Tucson...or at least your own living room.
