Best Place To Soak Up Urban Ambiance

Downtown Saturday Night

READERS' PICK: In a city in which no one really walks anywhere, it's no big surprise that Tucson's main people-walk is the place to soak up urban ambiance. Part open-air market, part political rally, part festival, part freakshow, Downtown Saturday Night remains one of the most vibrant things to happen to downtown. Even though continued efforts to expand the celebration of mercantilism, grassroots politics and the ever-popular sidewalk massage to other parts of downtown have been met with pretty abysmal results, the intersection of Congress and Sixth Avenue--epicenter of Downtown Saturday Night--remains the bomb. Where else do visiting blue hairs from Milwaukee looking for Hopi dreamcatchers run into peroxided skate punks selling hemp oil? Where else can you hear the Word of God spoken to the tune of a Sun Session B-side, and be rewarded with a disposable razor and bar of soap for your attention? Throw in a crew of low-rider Schwinn bikers, several sets of percussion instruments and a slight breeze, and you'll realize there's no need to ask where the party's at.

READERS' POLLRUNNER-UP: Fourth Avenue (See Best Annual Festival, Best Place To People Watch.)
