Best Fresh-Baked Bread

Great Harvest Bread Co.
7090 N. Oracle Road

READERS' PICK: The inhabitants of Canaan had to travel to Egypt in order to obtain bread, but Tucsonans only need trek northside to Great Harvest Bread Company in order to feast on freshly baked loaves of such down-to-earth yet heavenly creations as Cinnamon Raisin and Honey Whole Wheat. When Great Harvest lists apples, raisins and nuts as ingredients, they don't mean just a sliver or the bare hint of a taste; bite into a slice of Apple Cinnamon Raisin, and you'll encounter chunks of apple and plump whole raisins. Free slices are available for sampling if you need a little assistance deciding which loaf (or how many) to choose. For those who still aren't convinced that bread can be the source of a knee-weakening experience, Great Harvest also offers scones, muffins, cookies and cinnamon rolls, all of which are hopelessly habit-forming.

READERS' POLL RUNNER-UP--TIE: Aspen Mills Bread, 5575 E. River Road; and Beyond Bread, 3055 N. Campbell Ave.

CLUE IN: The rye at Grossman's Bake Shop, 3140 E. Ft. Lowell Road, is to die for. And their stable of consistently remarkable and inventive confections is highly reminiscent of a neighborhood shop off of a small cobbled avenue in the Old World.
