Best Neighborhood Bar--North

Chaparral Lounge
7850 N. Oracle Road

STAFF PICK: Housed in a storefront at a shopping center that's seen many failures over the last 20 years, the Chaparral Lounge is approaching its 20th anniversary. This definitely qualifies it as an institution on the north side of town. Three pool tables, half a dozen tables, and 20 or so bar stools play host to the lounge's regulars, a decidedly country-western bunch. You want food? Buy some chips from the vending machine. This place is all about drinking beer, although there's a full bar for those more "spiritually" inclined. The Chaparral offers Happy-Hour specials weekdays from 4 to 6 p.m. when domestic bottles are $1.50; there's no beer on tap, which is OK, 'cause all those long-necks contribute to the image. But hurry over: Word has it the property's owners aren't going to renew the lease on the last of the center's long-term tenants to remain standing. Well, screw corporate America! Have a few beers at the Chaparral, listen to a little Willie and Waylon, and meet the REAL people who live on the northwest side.
