Best Walk-Thru Liquors

Midtown Liquor & Deli
339 S. Stone Ave.

STAFF PICK: The drive-thru liquor store is a Tucson institution. It seems like it ought to be illegal, to hand someone a bottle or six-pack while they still have the engine running; but gloriously, it isn't. Really, no other city has made it so seemingly civilized and convenient to drink and drive. It's weird. It's Western. It's the kind of attitude that's slipped through the cracks of time, persisting into an age when we all know better. Drive-thru liquor stores are not a good idea, but they're great! And our favorite is Midtown Liquors, located just down the street from our own Weekly offices. Midtown is a drive-thru liquor store with a conscience: First off, they encourage foot traffic with their convenient walk-up window. And their friendly staff seems to be on a first-name basis with many of the store's, uh, commuters. They reserve the right to refuse service to anyone, and sometimes they even do. (We always appreciate their late-night recitations of Arizona's open-container law.) Best of all, in addition to a full stock of malt beverages, beer and distilled spirits, they carry ice-cold Yoohoo, and plenty of it.
