Old Town Artisans
186 N. Meyer Ave.

READERS' PICK: Out-of-town visitors the world over consider Old Town Artisans a Tucson must-see, and with good reason. The building itself is a gem: a restored, 1850s adobe in the historic El Presidio district, it's one of the few examples of territorial architecture to survive downtown's urban renewal in the '60s. Each room tells a chapter in its sometimes-venerable, sometimes-infamous history, from the beer-barrel ceiling of the brewery room to the handpainted Chinese wallpaper and gold leaf of the parlor. Winding through the labyrinthine complex, art shoppers will find six galleries featuring unique treasures by local and regional painters, photographers, ceramists, woodworkers, metal and textile artists, as well as hand-picked imports from the rest of the Americas.

READERS' POLL RUNNER-UP: Poster Warehouse, 5870 E. Broadway; and El Con mall.
