Best Neighborhood Walk

Sam Hughes
Campbell Avenue and Third Street

READERS' PICK: Foment revolutionary feelings in your soul as you stroll through the bourgeois, capitalist enclave of the Sam Hughes neighborhood. Historic bungalows from the '20s and '30s glow behind carefully landscaped yards. These houses cost a bundle! But, comrades, we can all enjoy the palm-lined streets, the beautiful architecture, the mature trees; we can enjoy the reduced traffic on the Third Street bike path; and when the revolution comes, we'll throw off the yoke of high-priced lawn ornaments and rise up against the privileged class. Walkers of the pueblo, unite!

READERS' POLL RUNNER-UP: Perhaps the only succulent-free oasis in the whole Southwest, it's no wonder the nestled neighborhood of Winterhaven, bordered by Fort Lowell and Country Club roads, attracts year-round strollers and Yuletide spirit. Best known for the annual Christmas light extravaganza complete with hot cocoa, carriage rides and all the typical Christmas caricatures, Winterhaven is a guilty pleasure of lush lawns and towering pines. Picturesque houses recount Winterhaven's weathered history. Passersby are bewitched by their unheeding mantra: "Nope, no desert out here." Really, it ought to be named "Summerhaven." However you look at it, one thing's certain: The rest of us will never have grass so green.

A REAL SCREAM: They're called avenues, but don't be deceived: You can walk six friends wide in the intimate lanes of Armory Park's alleys (Jacobus Avenue, Bean Avenue, Railroad Avenue, Herbert Avenue, Arizona Avenue and Russell Avenue); and no one has to walk in the gutter. Cars rarely disturb the peace, and there are great views over fences of quirky backyards and secret gardens in this charming, historic downtown enclave. Listen for roosters and trains, smell the bread coming out of the ovens over at the Rainbo Bakery, and keep your eyes peeled for the yard with five Chihuahuas and the bottle shed.
