STAFF PICK: As an artist-in-residence, Thom Lewis
works intensely with individual classrooms and devises modern
dance routines based on perceived interests and areas of strengths.
The results are nothing less than magical. At a recent culminating
performance, we witnessed once-reticent second- and third-graders
literally transformed. (One learning-disabled child who'd refused
to participate in P.E. for the past two years actually chose to
do a solo turn.) The parents, of course, were spellbound. Lewis
is direct, respectful and serious in his approach to teaching
dance. He treats his students as equal collaborators, while at
the same time pushing them to achieve their highest potential.
