Best Patio At A Bar

The Shanty
401 E. Ninth St.

READERS' PICK: No question about it, this longtime favorite has got the atmosphere down pat. At once open and intimate, festooned with artless greenery, one side just exposed enough through its venerable iron railings to prevent acoustic rebound, this is one of the most effortlessly people-friendly spaces in town. Come here on a weeknight with a co-worker or three for a peaceful Happy Hour in amiable circumstances, or later on a Friday or Saturday when the place is packed and has a stimulating apres-theatre buzz. There's something here that brings out innate friendliness; nowhere else do complete strangers seem so inclined to converse like buddies. To some of us this patio has become a regular stop, as comfortable and unquestioned as a room in our own houses, except you never have to interrupt the fun to run out for more suds.
