Best Shade Tree

STAFF PICK: In the dawg days of August, the swamp cooler provides more swamp than cooler, the cold beer is warm before the first sip. What's a parboiled desert dweller to do? Just west of the corner of Dodge and River Road towers the best shade tree in town, a mountain atlas pistachio (haven't seen many of those around lately, eh?) that literally blots out the sun, allowing a real breeze to dry out that sweat-drenched polyester, shrink-wrap uniform. Staring up toward the sky under this beautiful behemoth is like looking at a partial solar eclipse through a glass of Guinness stout. No light passes through. The mailmen, delivery people and lunch-in-your-car crowd line up for this one.
