Best Morning-Shift Waitress

STAFF PICK: Early in the morning, when the best most people can muster is a distantly unamused smile, Joyce, one of the waitresses at the Country House on East Broadway, can be downright comforting. Eschewing the platitudes and meaningless chatter many in the food service profession feel is their duty, Joyce simply (and promptly) sits you down, hands you a menu and lets you go to it. Oh, she'll listen if you have something to say; but her special talent is making you feel at home without the pressure of early morning chit-chat. Before you know it, she's reappeared with a plate of eggs and is calling you "dear." Like a combination of Alice from Mel's Diner and Happy Days' Mrs. Cunningham, Joyce is always a welcome visage in an otherwise blighted and bleary sunrise.
