Best Healthy Desserts

STAFF PICK: Former owners Scott Gardner and Jennifer Parkey established an oasis for those who'd sworn off nutritionally empty foods, like sugar. No longer did we feel deprived. Let the others have their Ding-Dongs and chocolate mousse, we said; bring on the Sprouts (621 N. Fourth Ave.) "Chocolate Ecstasy Cake." Wow! Here's a rich, dense chocolate tort with thick, creamy, fudge icing, and not a grain of sugar. And none of that synthetic sugar-substitute stuff, either. The only sweet nothings whispered here involved honey and pure maple syrup. And God bless ol' Bessie, there's no dairy, either. None. And if wheat was a problem for you, they often had heavenly spelt cakes. On one of our random forays, the dessert board included chocolate cupcakes, chocolate ecstasy cake, baklava, carrot cake, strawberry pie, sunny oat cookies, oatmeal raisin cookies and apple crisp. What's to miss? And one night just before closing, we lucked into the last slice of "Jerry's Berry Birthday Pie," a to-die-for luscious cheesecake smothered in juicy, sweetened blueberries. Breakfast eaters on the go can now purchase Sprouts' muffins--banana nut, blueberry corn and carrot ginger--at the Fourth Avenue Food Co-op, while supplies last. But with the restaurant now closed and its owners rumored to have parted ways, it appears Sprouts' sweet nothings are no more.
