Best Café Tête-À-Tête

STAFF PICK: Arriving from Portland less than a year ago and bringing with them the best coffee beans on the planet (Torrefazione from Italy), Serge Gongora and Lisa Schumaker have opened a café unique in its goods, services, and attitude. From the ringing "Bonjour!" directed toward customers passing through the door, to the at-your-service sincerity offered by whoever's behind the counter, Café Aroma (on South Fourth Avenue) asserts a distinct personality that's infinitely charming and firmly unforgettable.

Aroma's sunny yellow interior exudes an intimacy and smallness of scale sorely lacking in the plethora of cafés slowly (and ironically) taking over this inhospitable environment for the heated beverage. Whether you stumble through the threshold first thing in the morning or stop by just before midnight for one last cup, wandering into Aroma will not disappoint--especially in light of the gourmet salad and sandwich menu. Be forewarned: Serge is always willing to give an impromptu French lesson as he prepares your espresso; but he'll expect you to remember your grammar the next time around.
