Cheap Thrills HUSKER-DO: It's fall, and in a simpler time and more quaint place, that would mean the harvest season is just about coming to a close. Well, the times are hardly simple, the place certainly not quaint. But one gentle harvest tradition lives on with the annual Original Corn Fest, sponsored by The Hispanic Cultural Showcase of Tucson.

As event organizers proudly proclaim, "It's the Americas' most important contribution to the rest of the world. Chile may add zest to life for some, but corn is life for many more. Que viva the original corn fest!"

Pretty feisty ranting over the small, eternal kernel. But the fact remains: Corn is an inherent ingredient in our traditional larder. To celebrate, this year the festival will feature tons of entertainment, ranging from norteño to folklórico and western. Also on tap will be performances by the Colombian Kids, Trio Azalea, cloggers and the Tucson Ethnic Dance Ensemble. And of course, there will plenty of corn-related food and drink (the latter probably containing corn syrup).

Free event runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Himmel Park Outdoor Performance Center, 1000 N. Tucson Blvd., one block south of Speedway.

GABA GABA HEY: All things bike related--right down to those charming Spandex bloomers--will be on the block today, as the Greater Arizona Bicycling Association (GABA) fires up its bi-annual bicycle swap meet.

It's a great chance for shop owners to air their remaining summer stock, says event organizer Greg Yares, "and a great deal for the public."

"As opposed to our Spring sale, where there's a lot of extra stuff going on, this one is a pure bike swap meet," he says.

Event runs from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, November 15, in the parking lot of the PCC West Campus, 2202 W. Anklam Road, northeast corner of Anklam and Greasewood roads. For details, call 323-9020.

UNSCRUBBED VERSE: With her books Home in Three Days, Don't Wash and Normal Sex, award-winning poet and fiction writer Linda Smukler ties together crystalline, tantalizing prose poems. Home in Three Days is particularly precise, detailing the interplay between sexual excitement and insecurity through the course of an affair with a "married" lesbian.

Smukler reads from her work at 7 tonight in Antigone Books, 411 N. Fourth Ave. Call 792-3715 for details. TW
