Cheap Thrills

MOTHERLY MELODIES: Hear Patricia Preciado Martin, author of Songs My Mother Sang to Me: An Oral History of Mexican American Women, read from her work at 7 p.m. Thursday, October 24, at St. Francis in the Foothills, 4625 E. River Road. Martin, a former field historian and consultant at the Arizona Historical Society, will also discuss such deep-rooted themes as cultural and spiritual empowerment, healing rituals, religious traditions and prayer songs.

The suggested donation is $5, and advance tickets are available at Antigone Books, 441 N. Fourth Ave., and The Book Mark, 5001 E. Speedway. Call 743-7298 for information.

MEXICAN SPECTRUM: Following a recent appearance by Cuauhtemoc Cardenas, former presidential candidate for Mexico's left-of-center Party of the Democratic Revolution, the UA Latin American Area Center presents Lic. Carlos Castillo Peraza, secretary of international relations for the conservative National Action Party, on Monday, October 28.

Castillo appears as part of the ongoing Hacia Donde Va Mexico? (Where is Mexico Going?) series, highlighting that country's future as seen from varying political vantage points.

"He's here to present the conservative vision," says center spokeswoman Sara Gavney "We think it's important that people are able to hear all sides about what is occurring in Mexico."

The free lecture is at 7 p.m. in the UA Modern Languages Building auditorium. Call 622-4002 for information.

BREAKFAST OF CHAMPS: Just when you thought it was safe to tote a concealed Uzi, Graham County Sheriff Richard Mack rides into town to let ya know it ain't so.

Mack, who gained a national name for himself by thumbing his nose at federal weapons registration laws, recently lost his primary bid for re-election reportedly due to folk's discontent with his high-profile, rambling ways. But you can still get an earful when he speaks to the Saturday Morning Breakfast Club at 8 a.m. on October 26.

Lest you forget, the club is comprised of civic-minded watchdogs who altruistically keep the rest of us safe from such threats as the New World Order, E.T., Uncle Sam's redneck-thwarting gun laws and fluoridated water. Hear Mack describe his fight against that frivolous Brady Bill at Luby's Cafeteria, 7140 E. Rosewood Ave. Call 325-5420 for information TW
