That's in addition to a car show and talent contest, all stretching down the avenue from University Boulevard to Eighth Street.

Amateurs are invited to get their acts together for stage shows running the gamut from dance, comedy and music. And there are big bucks to be had, from $350 for first place to $50 for third. To register for the talent show, call 792-0219. Deadline for entries is Thursday, August 28. Entry fee is $10, or $15 for late entry.

NORTHERN MELODIES: You've caught its joyous strains in every genuine Mexican eatery in town. Now's your chance to hear northern Mexico's finest tunes firsthand, when the Pio Decimo Center hosts the 1997 Norteño Music Festival and Street Fair.

The melodic action kicks off on Saturday, August 30, with Battle of the Bands.

"It will be a variety of traditional norteño bands," says Margaret Kish, Pio Decimo executive director. "What we've noticed in the last few years is an influx of younger bands competing with the old-timers--and holding their own pretty well."

On Sunday, August 31, local Waila favorites The Joaquin Brothers hit the afternoon stage, followed by Grupo Caliente from Phoenix, and Tucson's Los Centanarios. Folklorico dancers will perform throughout the day, and food and beverages will be available. Proceeds benefit Pio Decimo's crucial education, day care, housing and healthcare services for needy families.

Free events run from 2 to 11 p.m. daily on South Fourth Avenue at 36th Street, next to Greyhound Park. For information, call 622-2801.

FINAL HURRAH: The Old Pueblo's venerable boys of summer, a.k.a. the Tucson Toros, put the wraps on a sizzling season when they go up against the Edmonton Trappers for four nights of minor league baseball at its flashiest.

And the flash doesn't only come at the end of a bat: On Saturday, August 30, the field will be aglow with the Fireworks Spectacular. There will also be big happenings at each of the other games, ranging from baseball card extravaganzas to souvenir spectaculars, all geared to send our chaps off in fine form.

Game times are 7:30 p.m. Friday, August 29, and 7 p.m. Saturday, August 30, through Monday, September 1. Admission ranges from $4 to $8. For details, call 325-2621. TW
