PENCIL-IN A POET: "The pulse of conformity...throbs like a chorus of angels in my throat

Cheap Thrills I make up memories as I go along...working my desperation...into a novel no one will read...but everyone says has the making...of a great movie."

So says poet Jack Evans in An Armageddon of Words. For 25 years Evans has been performing his poetry from Flagstaff to Tucson, in coffee houses, churches, hotels and museums. He's also practiced his craft with a variety of poetry and performance art ensembles, including the Revolving Wheel, Theatre of Outrage and Excellence, and the Hungry Eye.

Tonight he brings his talent back to town as part of the Make a Date With a Poet series. Free reading is 7 p.m., followed by an open reading, in The Book Mark, 5001 E. Speedway. Call 881-5180 for information.

MUY RICO: He draws his material from the far reaches of South America, and on Thursday, August 14, award-winning guitarist Brent Poe brings his acclaimed style to Pima Community College.

The recital will highlight his latest CD, 20th Century Latin Guitar Works, including selections by Brouwer, Lauro, Barrios, Sainz de la Maza and Villa Lobos.

Performance is 7:30 p.m. in the PCC Center for Fine Arts Recital Hall, 2202 W. Anklam Road. Tickets are $5, available at Hear's Music and the PCC West Campus cashier. For details, call 327-6587.

GUINEA GALA: She's a pig, and she's livin' large. As a matter of a fact, Emily, a local guinea and official mascot of the Clues Unlimited Bookstore, is planning one high-on-the-hog celebration to mark her first birthday on Saturday, August 16; and the bash honors her friends at the Humane Society of Tucson, as well.

The free rodent rendezvous will feature carrot cake with all the trimmings, along with a raffle, and the opportunity for pet-lovers to meet many of the society's charming, offbeat and highly adoptable lizards, rabbits, even other guinea pigs. Raffle proceeds and 10 percent of book sales will benefit the Humane Society. For information, call 326-8533.

UPTOWN DOWNTOWN: Homero Cerón and Cool Breeze top the evening agenda for another Downtown Saturday Night. They play marimba, steel drum, guitar and conga from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. in the Ronstadt Center.

Jim Culver lights up Fourth Avenue's Winsett Park stage with his soulful original western music, in a Tucson reunion performance from 7 to 10 p.m. Last but hardly least, Thee Dueling Idiots shout it out with blades and buffoonery at 8, 9 and 10 p.m. in Arizona Alley. Once again, this irascible duo "stages the classical-turned-slapstick swashbuckling into real adventure."

And, as always, there will be plenty of chow and fine art available for your perusal, as downtown's denizens throw wide their doors. For details, call 624-9977. TW
