Filler Cheap Thrills

BETSY ROSS PARTY: The third annual July Fourth celebration, newly named to pay homage to the Union's original fiber artist (you know, she made the flag), gets underway just after sunset. Storm the castle at Womankraft, 388 S. Stone Ave., for a low-key celebration with roasted corn, watermelon, soft drinks, and a seat on the roof to watch the fireworks. Guess the time at which A Mountain will catch fire and win a night in the castle's second floor guest suite. Admission is $3 (to cover costs), with reservations recommended, as rooftop seating is limited. Call 629-9976 for information.

VIDEO GLORY: What better day to celebrate your independence from mainstream views than Thursday, July 4, when the weekly progressive video series VideoTENSIONS drops a few bombshells of its own with VideoGLORY, a global perspective on freedom, independence and coming-of-age stories. Both independent-and youth-produced media are presented in this free screening at 7:30 p.m. in the Modern Languages Building auditorium, UA mall between Cherry Avenue and Second Street. The UA Media Arts-sponsored series continues through July 18.

FIRE WORKS: The Northwest Fire District pulls out all the bells and whistles with open houses from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 6, at Stations 61 to 66. Visitors are invited to tour the stations, talk with the fire fighters and get a close-up look at all the trucks and equipment. Call 742-4749 for the location of the station nearest you.

DOWNTOWN SATURDAY: Take yourself for a stroll between 7 and 10 p.m. Saturday, July 6, and brush up on the goings on in the Downtown Arts District. Vibrant gallery displays, street performers and live music--from acoustic guitarist Michael Gruber at 7 p.m. on Pennington Street to alternative rock group Pet The Fish at 7:30 at the Ronstadt Transit Center--are but a few of the reasons to shed your sleepy summer skin and show your true colors. Call 624-9977 for information.

ART OPENING: A little out of the Congress Street fray, José Galvez Gallery gets into the Downtown Saturday Night spirit with newly acquired works by various Los Angeles-based Chicano and Chicana artists. In addition to the new works, the gallery's summer show will include recent works by local favorites Christina Cardenas, Leo Limon, Joseph Maruska and Tony de Carlo. Since the gallery won't resume regular business hours until the end of July, Downtown Saturday Nights this month are your only opportunity to catch a glimpse of the goods, which range from small paintings to serigraphs and mixed-media pieces. Call 624-6878 for information.

LAMPLIGHT ON: The Lamplight Reading Series returns with a free reading by published Phoenix poets David Chorlton and Sheila E. Murphy at 7 p.m. Sunday, July 7, at the Blue Willow Restaurant, 2616 N. Campbell Ave. Call 883-4412 for information. TW
