After writing that Arizona's basketball team was an underdog in its game against UCLA at McKale, Star columnist Greg Hansen was harassed by several UA basketball players. After the game, as Hansen interviewed Miles Simon, Joseph Blair approached and said, "Don't answer any questions from him. He's punk."

In response to Hansen's column, Coach Lute Olson said, "According to what the players said, I think we should thank the Daily Star for our focus out there.... We appreciate their assistance today."

PASSING THE PIPE, ER, THE BUCK

Former UA basketball player Brian Williams was fined $1,200 by customs officials in the Cayman Islands for allegedly possessing a marijuana pipe. Williams said the pipe belonged to a member of his traveling party.

GEEZ, TRY THE DECAF NEXT TIME

In a traffic dispute with 66-year-old Shirley E. Jones, UA assistant basketball coach Phillip Johnson allegedly punched the truck Jones was driving, breaking her driver's door window and spraying glass inside the vehicle.

"It was an accident," Johnson said. "I wanted to get her attention. I banged on the window and it just broke."

THE SCENT OF A WOMAN DRIVES HIM WILD

UA football lineman Frank Middleton was given two years' probation and ordered to pay $500 for slugging Oregon State's mascot, a woman dressed as a beaver, as he was leaving the field after a 1995 game. TW
