Drama
There’s more movie here than the story needs, and the slowly developing plot is a mark against the French family drama You Will Be My Son. Paul de Marseul (Niels Arestrup), an aging vintner, is reaching the point when he has to pass the family estate and winery along to his only son, Martin (Lorànt Deutsch). Trouble is, he doesn’t much like his son. Instead, he’d rather have his legacy in the hands of Philippe (Nicolas Bridet), his partner’s son and already a successful and prodigious winemaker in America. Arestrup is superb throughout, but he overshadows the rest of the cast by such a wide margin that there’s no counterbalance to his performance. Because of that, as well as the tycoon-against-his-family storyline, You Will Be My Son is effectively just a melodrama, albeit one that will make you want to tour some French vineyards.
Director: Gilles Legrand
Producer: Frédéric Brillion
Cast: Niels Arestrup, Lorànt Deutsch, Patrick Chesnais, Anne Marivin, Nicolas Bridet and Valérie Mairesse
