Wristcutters: A Love Story

This is a clever idea for a film, lifting short-story writer Etgar Keret’s tale of a grungy afterlife for suicides and converting it into a grungy-looking film with a lot of heart—although the end result suffers from a slight shortage of follow-through. Patrick Fugit plays Zia, a deceased young man who finds himself in a world of rundown stores, littered beaches and desert landscapes. While on a trip to find his also-deceased ex-girlfriend, he meets Mikal (Shannyn Sossamon), who’s looking for a way out. I wonder if they’ll fall in love? Other than the incredibly obvious central romantic conceit, there are some clever bits, many of which are too clever. Like, they drive around in a car that has a black hole under the seat. Ha. Ha. Ha. Eh.
