Wordplay

Director Patrick Creadon takes the first step toward making crossword puzzles the new spelling bees in the film industry with this documentary that received much-deserved acclaim at both the Sundance and Tribeca Film Festivals. New York Times crossword puzzle editor Will Shortz invites viewers into the 28th annual American Crossword Puzzle Tournament, which he hosts in Stamford, Conn. Some 500 competitors battle for the $4,000 prize while Creadon intersperses celebrity commentaries from luminaries including former President Bill Clinton, baseball pitcher Mike Mussina and singing duo the Indigo Girls. Also, Merl Reagle, a crossword-puzzle constructor, explains the anatomy of a puzzle. Even if you don’t know a three-letter word for something with ink that you use to write, you’ll enjoy this complete movie-going experience.
