Based on the torture killings that were later deemed the “Backpack Murders,” this gruesome film shows what is believed to have happened. Three twentysomethings take an innocent road trip to see a meteor crater at Wolf Creek National Park in the Australian Outback. When their car breaks down, and they’re left stranded, a supposed rescuer appears with a hearty laugh and a quick Mr. Fix-It plan. However, the pseudo savior has a much more sadistic plan in mind for the unsuspecting trio. Despite being acclaimed at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival and having an inexplicable hypnotic appeal, writer/director Greg McLean’s slasher film is ultimately excessive in its extreme gore and inhumanity.
