Why Did I Get Married?
The prolific Tyler Perry tests the sanctity of marriage in this film adaptation of his recent stage play. Four married couples embark on their annual retreat in the Colorado Mountains to reveal the skeletons in their closets and declare that wedding vows are both futile and fragile. Each one-note character exaggerates his or her self-defining personality trait, from the adulterous husband to the fat wife with self-image issues. An explosive marital war ensues with sexist and racist stereotypes, an ugly attempt at humor, verbal abuse and venereal diseases. Perry’s depressing and negative outlook on marriage does nothing to inspire or entertain, although it does present the question: Tyler Perry, why did I go to this movie?
