War Thoughts

I do not like this feeling.

War is imminent--by the time you read this, there's a good chance it will already be underway. The president has made it clear that he's bent on invading Iraq, no matter what anybody thinks.

As a reminder of this, jets have been flying around Davis-Monthan Air Force Base all day today. I can hear them from my office, which is located near the base. I've never heard them before from inside The Weekly's office. Maybe it's because they're flying more. Or maybe I am just more sensitive to the sounds because war is on my mind.

I can't help but think of my uncle, who's a major in the Army. He's supposed to head to Kuwait soon. Oh, one more thing: His wife is pregnant with their first child.

I can't help but think of how all these kids, some no more than 18, who are about to be put in harm's way to fight this war, literally risking everything to depose a man who may--or may not--be a direct threat to this country.

I can't help but think of the people in Iraq who have nowhere to go, and know that the artillery is coming--and can only hope they aren't hurt. How must that feel?

I can't help but think of how lucky I am to have the things I have and to live in the country that I live in--and how wonderful it is that I can publicly disagree with our president and not be afraid of serious retribution.

But I also can't help but wonder whether this war is really necessary. I simply don't know. My government tells me Saddam Hussein could be a direct threat to us here in the United States. But why don't they show me proof?

No, I don't like this feeling one bit.
