Waiting for Superman

An eye-opening look at the problems that plague the U.S. public-school system and, more importantly, the millions of children it lets down annually. Documentary filmmaker Davis Guggenheim knows this mountain is too high to climb all at once; after all, how do you fix corrupt, underfunded, underperforming, regressive and bloated all at once? Instead of trying for the summit, “Superman” aims for a base camp, introducing problems we may not have known are so severe alongside some upstart programs that seem to be making headway in some of the hardest-hit parts of the country. As frustrating as it is informational, Waiting for “Superman” may be the subject of a callous Academy Award marketing push, but its heart and mind are in the right place.
