A WHOLE NEW STORE
On Saturday, April 18 at 10 a.m., Wooden Tooth Records will open its doors to vinylphiles in Tucson to sift through their wares, and there's going to be a lot to look through. For the initial inventory, there will be about 7,000 records on hand bought up large collections from two different longtime collectors that were looking to offload some vinyl before moving. About 3,000 of that stash will be priced at $1.99, while the remaining ranges more in the $4 to $16 neighborhood.
Wooden Tooth Records will host 2150 a concert on opening day featuring local favorites such as The Myrrors, Jess Matsen, Katterwaul, Trans Van Santos and Burning Palms. The live performances will run from about 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. After that, you can stop by Wooden Tooth Records, located in the backroom of Café Passe (415 N. Fourth Ave.), during regular operating hours: daily from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m.
IN THE COURTYARD
You can celebrate record store day all day at Old Paint Records, located at 201 N. Court Ave. According to owner Kevin Mayfield, the store will be offering a "handpicked selection of tasty new and used vinyl" with plenty of new stock for the event from noon until 10 p.m. Old Paint will also be offering specials and giveaways, while across the courtyard, La Cocina will be dishing out food and drink. There will be live music from 6 until 9 p.m. and DJ Herm will spin from 10 p.m. until 2 a.m.
SOMETHING REISSUED, SOMETHING NEW
Swing by Zia Records at 3370 E. Speedway Blvd. for a live performance from Tucson's own Howe Gelb. In celebration of two Giant Sand releases, Gelb will be performing solo at the record store beginning at 4 p.m.
At Zia, you can pick up a copy of the brand new "Heartbreak Pass" LP in advance of its national release. If you're one of those fans who just "likes their old stuff better," the 30-year anniversary re-issue of Giant Sand's first album "Valley of Rain" is probably more your speed. Gelb will be signing records at the event this Saturday as well.
The location at 3655 N. Oracle Road will be hosting Clay Dudash live at 3 p.m.
Although there will be hundreds of Record Store Day releases such as vinyls from Wu-Tang Clan, Slayer, Syd Barrett, Waylon Jennings and Brand New, the store will also be selling the limited pressing of a live in-store performance by Tegan and Sara recorded on September 10, 2013. Only 500 copies of the opaque purple vinyl will be sold exclusively at Zia locations.
And if all of that isn't enough digging and sifting and flipping, PDQ, located at 2432 N. Dodge Blvd., will be open from Noon until 6 p.m. for even more record searching. After four years of being vaulted up, PDQ re-opened under original ownership in December 2014.
