V/H/S/ 2

Readers of my movie reviews know that I am not a fan of the “found footage” movie, especially when used for horror purposes. I hate that whole thing where somebody is being chased by a monster or evil cat or whatnot, and they manage to keep the film rolling and their subject centered while running for their life. That’s just crap! They would either drop that camera or use it as a weapon against their enemy. Lo and behold, we actually have a found-footage movie that works for a change. It’s more of an anthology than a film that’s tied together in any real way, with four segments nicely handled by four sets of directors. Eduardo Sanchez, co-director of The Blair Witch Project and, consequently, the man fully responsible for the found-footage craze, does his best work yet in a segment where a man goes for a bike ride in the forest. Jason Eisener, director of the fun and sick Hobo with a Shotgun, gives us a crazed alien invasion segment involving hilariously bad alien costumes and sloppy lighting that somehow works. Gareth Evans (The Raid: Redemption) comes up with the film’s sickest segment, involving a cult and a truly disgusting birth. The least effective segment, a short film involving a man with an eye implant, is still pretty good. Horror fans … you are going to like this one.
