Writer/director/producer/actor Tyler Perry tends to straddle the fine line between light entertainment and soap-opera melodrama. His latest production leans more toward the latter, but the delightful performances of Kathy Bates and Alfre Woodard keep the plot from completely tipping the scales. The two seasoned actresses show relentless charm and spirit as they zip across the country, Thelma and Louise-style. It’s not the law they’re escaping, but their corrupt, corporate-climbing kids who also dabble in adultery. Next time, Perry should leave all of the over-the-top hoopla behind and instead make a spinoff with Bates’ booze-loving, adventurous matriarch and Woodard’s blunt voice of reason.
