Documentary
With apologies to Barack Obama and George W. Bush, there might not be a more divisive political figure in the country than Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio. There is just no middle ground where Arpaio is concerned, and the debates over his leadership and law enforcement have only intensified since the push for Senate Bill 1070 began in 2010. Arpaio had already been conducting sweeps for illegal immigrants around Phoenix before SB 1070 became law, and one family—the Figueroas—is featured in Two Americans, with their arrest and looming day in court balancing a look behind the scenes in the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office. The star of the documentary, if that’s applicable, is 9-year-old Katherine Figueroa, who stands to lose her parents through what is ultimately a legal interpretation of state law. Her resolve is something to see.
