What happens when DreamWorks Animation scrapes the bottom of the Pixar barrel? It pulls up the remnants of A Bug’s Life and Cars, crudely stitches them together and calls it Turbo. Theo (voice by Ryan Reynolds) is just an ordinary snail with a yearning to become an Indy 500 racer. He accidently has his DNA scrambled with nitro-methane when he falls into a car engine during a drag race down the L.A. River. Theo becomes Turbo, and he and his overprotective older brother (voice by a slumming Paul Giamatti), are snail-napped by a taco-truck driver to participate in a behind-closed-doors snail race conducted by the owners of an empty shopping plaza. Once they find out about Turbo’s supersnail powers, everybody’s off to get Turbo into ... where else? The Indy 500. Ultimately, it’s a formulaic film with bland jokes that really does drag out at snail’s pace.
