Tucson International Mariachi Conference 

When: April 27-29, 2-10 p.m. and Sat., April 30, 10 a.m.-10 p.m. 2011
Special guests, Grammy Award winners Aida Cuevas and Mariachi Los Camperos de Nati Cano, star in the Espectacular Concert at 7:30 p.m., Friday, April 29, in the Tucson Convention Center Arena (260 S. Church Ave.). $25 to $89. A student showcase takes place at 7 p.m., Thursday, April 28, also in the arena. $10; free child age 2 or younger. A mariachi Mass is celebrated at 9 a.m., Saturday, April 30, at St. Augustine Cathedral (192 S. Stone Ave.). Fiesta Garibaldi, a re-enactment of the sights and sounds of Garibaldi Plaza in Mexico City, including mariachi, folklorico dancing, food and arts and crafts vendors, takes place from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday, April 30, at Kino Sports Complex (2500 E. Ajo Way). $8; free child age 10 or younger. Mariachi jam sessions and arts and crafts vendors are on the plaza of the Tucson Convention Center from 2 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, April 27; and from 2 to 10 p.m., Thursday and Friday, April 28 and 29. Free. This year's festival celebrates the 40th anniversary of Mariachi Cobre, whose history originates with the first youth mariachi in Tucson.
