Trust the Man

Director Bart Freundlich uses Hollywood’s standard “love hurts” checklist to create this painfully mundane unromantic noncomedy. Flatulence and toilet talk are checked off the list immediately before the marriage of Tom and Rebecca (David Duchovny and Julianne Moore) can meander through the routine relationship phases of dissatisfaction, adultery and pseudo-therapy (including self-involved psychobabble about sex). Meanwhile, the all-too-familiar slacker character afraid of commitment (Billy Crudup) and his spokesperson-for-commitment girlfriend (Maggie Gyllenhaal) simultaneously meander through the same damn relationship phases. A disastrous dinner party, a lesbian predator, cartoonish rebound guys and a half-dozen endings are tossed in for no other reason than to complete the checklist.
