Trouble the Water

New Orleans native Kimberly Scott shot and narrated much of this documentary about Hurricane Katrina. That wouldn’t be so remarkable, except she’d never shot a film before, and she actually stayed in New Orleans throughout the hurricane. Scott was a small-time drug dealer and wannabe rapper who managed to film some of the most terrifying and rewarding footage to come out of one of the biggest disasters in U.S. history. With help from filmmakers Carl Deal and Tia Lessin, Scott’s footage becomes the focus of a story that shows specific examples of the human consequences of the disaster. It’s an almost-required supplement to the news footage from that period, turning anonymous victims into full-fledged human beings, and their stories into terrifying tales of heroism and survival.
