Transgender Awareness Week

Transsexual, transgender, gender-queer, masculine-of-gender, feminine-of-gender, two-spirit, butch, femme, gender-fluid, masculine-of-center, feminine-of-center and the entire gender galaxy are celebrated in Transgender Awareness Week 2013: Celebrating Trans* Life! through Monday, Nov. 25. The week includes lectures, workshops, poetry, a potluck, a resource fair, a vigil and procession, a salsa party, live music, health testing, and more; all events are free. Educator and wellness facilitator Qui Alexander presents "Queer/Trans People of Color: Exploring Intersections of Race, Gender and Sexuality," at 6 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 21, in the UA's Cesar E. Chavez Building, 1110 North Campus. Mara Keisling, founding executive director of the National Center for Transgender Equality, presents "Injustice at Every Turn: A Report of the National Transgender Discrimination Survey," at 3 p.m., Friday, Nov. 22, in Drachman Hall, No. 118, of the UA's Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health. Keisling presents the keynote, "Celebrating Trans* Lives" at 7 p.m., Friday, Nov. 22, in the UA's Gallagher Theater in the Student Union. "Dancing the Night Away: A Salsa Party," starts at 9 p.m., Friday, Nov. 22 at Studio ONE, 197 E. Toole Ave. Mobile testing and a workshop, "Trans Health: Top Bits and Bottom Bits, Diseases and Fun Stuff," take place from 2 to 5 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 23, at EON Youth Center, 430 E. Seventh St. From 6 to 9 p.m., Tucson musicians perform "front porch" music in the Wingspan parking lot, 430 E. Seventh St. "Feed Your Soul," a picnic and open discussion about spirituality and Trans* experiences, takes place from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 24, at Ramada 7 in Fort Lowell Park, 2900 N. Craycroft Road. Bring your lunch or something to share. Panel discussions about legal and workplace issues take place at 3:30 and 5:30 p.m. in the Tucson Room of the UA Student Union. Parking is free. A panel discussion with Q&A time, "TransTalk: An Intimate Conversation About Life as a Transgendered Individual," takes place from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., Monday, Nov. 25, at the Community Partnership of Southern Arizona training center, 2502 N. Dodge Blvd. A brown-bag discussion of Trans* aging issues is at noon, Monday, Nov. 25, in the Our Family Services Conference Room, 3830 E. Bellevue St. An all-ages poetry night and open mic starts at 6:30 p.m., Monday, Nov. 25, at Fluxx Productions, 414 E.
