Train Depot Festival and Re-Enactment

The Railroad Silver Spike Festival celebrates the first train's arrival in Tucson from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, March 20. Dignitaries in period dress act out Estevan Ochoa's original presentation of a silver railroad spike, and re-enactors of the 4th Cavalry Regiment Band stationed at Fort Lowell play brass-band music of the era. Vintage wagons, vehicles and bicycles are displayed. Kids ride a toy train and play in a jumping castle. Local crafts and food are for sale. The Postal History Museum and Vail Mail-By-Rail have exhibits, and Union Pacific provides a chance simulate operating a diesel engine. At 2 p.m., guests are invited to the Fox Theatre for a screening of Oklahoma, in which Tucson's own historic locomotive #1673 has a cameo role. Call 623-2223, or visit tucsonhistoricdepot.org for information.
