The kept woman is a well-worn bit of cinematic fabric, but In Secret—based on an Émile Zola novel—gives that concept a dark twist. What begins as a wanton romance movie becomes a psychological thriller in short order, with Oscar Isaac (late of Inside Llewyn Davis) cozying up to Elizabeth Olsen (Martha Marcy May Marlene) without thinking through the consequences of her ditching her husband (Tom Felton). Olsen, it should be noted, can apparently give really good performances whenever she wants. She’s really good here and is building enough cachet that her career will not be defined by her more famous twin sisters. Because of her, In Secret is almost good enough to make it worthwhile viewing, but the filmmakers just didn’t know what to do with poor Jessica Lange. Her work is so over the top that it overshadows just about everything else.
