Thérèse

Sometimes, a movie is just plain boring and that’s the end of it. It might look great, it might feature a favorite actor, and it might be about something universal, but once you put it all together it’s just a snoozefest. That’s Thérèse, a French period drama about a loveless arranged marriage. Thérèse (Audrey Tautou) feels trapped in her relationship with Bernard (Gilles Lellouche), a pine tycoon. Yep: pines. That’s how dry this film is—even the riches are wooden. As an unhappily married woman, Thérèse seeks out her distractions, up to and including trying to poison her husband. Last year, Emmanuelle Riva became the oldest Best Actress nominee for Amour. Rewind 50 years and she played the title character in a version of this story titled Thérèse Desqueyroux. That one will keep your attention. Thérèse you’d just sleep right through.
