There Will Be Blood

Yes, there will be blood, especially in the stunning final act of this modern masterpiece. There will also be an otherworldly performance by Daniel Day-Lewis, a stone-hearted look at rural America, tales of abuse, imprecations against God, 30 years of history, explosions, silence and the emergence of Paul Thomas Anderson as not only one of the finest directors working today, but the only one of his generation to have produced a true epic masterpiece. There Will Be Blood’s long, beautifully realized and largely wordless opening; its creepy assault on the traditional life that the Thomas Kinkades of the world romanticize for profit; and its stunning visual and musical elements make this the film to beat, perhaps for years to come. See it, and you may never think of milkshakes in the same way again.
