The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep
Robert Nelson Jacobs’ adaptation of Dick King-Smith’s novel is like E.T. in water, but without the extra panache that would make it a cinematic classic. Alex Etel stars as a freckle-faced boy whose servant family is sent to work at a loch-side home while his father is off fighting the Nazis. The young lad discovers a mystical egg that hatches into what looks like an uncooked gray chicken leg named Crusoe. His discovery is kept a secret until the creature grows to the size of a dinosaur and begins splashing around in the local lake. Despite the CGI wizardry and charming performances from Emily Watson and Ben Chaplin, the film still lacks the magical quality found in Steven Spielberg’s classic.
