On Aug. 1, 2008, disaster struck on K2, the second-highest mountain in the world. Eleven mountaineers died after a series of misfortunes struck the teams who had come from around the world to climb the mountain. Afterward, egos clashed, stories changed and the tragedy quickly turned into controversy. To give you an idea of how dangerous this mountain is, one of every four people who try the ascent don’t make it. This documentary uses actual footage and seamless re-creations to tell the story about what happened that day and the weeks leading up to it. Parallel to the main story are interviews with Walter Bonatti, who in 1954 was the youngest team member of the first expedition to conquer K2. His story resulted in controversy as well. The doc is both powerful and tragic, and it’s a moving testament to thrill-seekers who go the extra mile to help others
