This lackluster remake is a perfect example of why the PG-13 horror trend needs to stop. Dylan Walsh plays David, a guy who ingratiates himself into fatherless families. When they end up not being his idea of perfect, David goes nuts and kills them all. Michael (Penn Badgley)—the son of David’s current girlfriend, Susan (Sela Ward)—is suspicious of him and soon finds out about David’s diabolical past after a series of strange incidents. While it remains relatively faithful to several details in the case of murderer John List (on which it’s loosely based), the movie offers nothing in the way of dread and the scares are completely nonexistent. Walsh and Badgley look as if they're just killing time before they go back to their TV shows, and Sela Ward plays quite possibly the most clueless individual to ever grace the screen. It’s an excruciatingly tedious movie that was obviously made by everyone involved to score a quick paycheck. Let’s just hope they’re happy with their money.
