Crime drama, Mystery, Thriller
One of the most accomplished motion pictures in recent years, The Secret in Their Eyes deserves its Oscar as the Best Foreign Language Film—and a real case could be made that the “Foreign Language” part of that qualifier could be cut out entirely. Inspired by a novel, and unfolding like one, The Secret in Their Eyes details the lives that are thrown together through the investigation of a brutal murder. The Argentinean film alternates between the months following the murder and a detective’s recollections 25 years later, as he tries to find peace and some answers while writing a novel about the case. It’s a smart, detailed, deliberate film that doesn’t sacrifice its story for cheap movie tricks—and it certainly doesn’t waste your time or money.
