The Salt of Life

Director Gianni Di Gregorio has a rather unusual biography. He began as a writer, and his first credit didn’t arrive until he was 37. Then he became an actor … at 49. He directed his first film, Mid-August Lunch … at 59. At the age of 62, Di Gregorio has made a follow-up, The Salt of Life, which shares some links with Mid-August Lunch. For instance, Di Gregorio plays a guy named Gianni in both films, and there is pronounced mother-son friction, mostly played for comedy. The Salt of Life is a film about getting older and knowing it. It’s about being ignored by younger people and finding ways to fit in once the world has said it has passed you by; it’s the sort of film you can only make when you hit 60. Like Mid-August Lunch, The Salt of Life is observant and worth seeking out, if only for something a little different.
