Drama, Romance
A shallow socialite on the brink of spinsterhood (Naomi Watts) marries a stuffed-shirt English doctor (Edward Norton) in order to alleviate her boredom and to aggravate her opinionated mother. When an outbreak of cholera hits China, the couple moves to Hong Kong on a mission of good deeds, but their insistent bickering charges every scene. When the plight of the unfortunate locals intensifies, the belligerent wife has an affair with a dapper bureaucrat (Liev Schreiber) and life-changing events compound, forcing the unlikely couple to connect in unimaginable ways. Luckily director John Curran received official permission to film in China; the scenery is absolutely breathtaking. The undeniably original score won a Golden Globe, and further proves the impeccable quality of this well-rounded film.
